About That "Drive High" Campaign...

I've heard a few words thrown around about this new campaign–words like, "Hilarious", "Offbeat", and "Silly", but the one word no one seems to be saying is "effective". The problem is that this broadcast campaign simply fails on two levels. For one, they don't actually illustrate the dangers of driving while high. More to the point, in all these campaigns it's insinuated that the perp actually gets away with it. You can't blame them when taking into account evidence that...

...the results to date of crash culpability studies have failed to demonstrate that drivers with cannabinoids in the blood are significantly more likely than drug-free drivers to be culpable in road crashes. … [In] cases in which THC was the only drug present were analyzed, the culpability ratio was found to be not significantly different from the no-drug group.” –Cannabis and Cannabinoids: Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Therapeutic Potential. New York: Haworth Press. Pp. 313-323.

Second, the campaign exploits common tropes attributed to "stoners" to accomplish some kind of failed comic relief on behalf of a common stereotype. Now, I don't really smoke marijuana, but I certainly don't frown on people do. In fact, I'm more than glad it's legal and, given the millions in state revenue for the first month alone, that's nearly reason enough for every state to follow suit. And you can argue all day about making light of an issue at the expense of someone else, but at the end of the day, these commercials aren't even all that funny. Anyway, I digress. Check out the series here, here, and here.

What's For Breakfast?

Buzzfeed, usually resigned to being me-too, pretentious list fare, actually put out a neat video on what you can expect to have for breakfast in various countries around the world. As much as I enjoy pancakes, that's more of an after church Sunday thing....and since I don't go to church, it's more of a never thing. I'm an oatmeal with granola and a banana on the side person anyway.

Amazon Prime jumps to $99 yearly, is still worth it

If you're like me, you love Amazon and their customer-focused business model. You're also maybe an Amazon Prime member that, up until yesterday, was a mere $79 a year. Pennies really given how much they offer with the service (express shipping, on-demand video, and the Kindle lending library). Well, the dream is over and the service is now $99, but if you ask me, it's still worth it. However, we all want a deal, so if you love Prime but that extra Andrew Jackson is a deal-breaker, you can still renew for $79. Here's how:

  • Look up your Prime expiration date.
  • Purchase a Prime gift membership here and have it sent to your own email address after your membership is expected to expire.
  • Place your order.
  • Turn off your Prime subscription auto-renew.
  • On or after the date your Prime expires, you should receive an email from Amazon with a year of Prime membership.

Until Amazon starts charging sales tax to Colorado, I'll stay. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy me that 2-day shipping. Read the rest of the article here for additional details on student prices and other changes.

Font Men

An eye-opening look at the work and thought that goes into designing typefaces. And don't pass on watching this because you've seen "Helvetica" because this is fantastic.

You may not have heard of Jonathan Hoefler or Tobias Frere-Jones but you've seen their work. Before their recent split, they collectively ran the most successful and well respected type design studio in the world, creating fonts used by everyone from the Wall Street Journal to the President of the United States.

Font Men, gives a peek behind the curtain into the world of Jonathan and Tobias. Tracking the history of their personal trajectories, sharing the forces that brought them together and giving an exclusive look at the successful empire they built together.

Being a designer can be difficult, but designing not just a typeface but a marketable, useable typeface is a whole other beast. Spare 6 minutes and check out the (very) short film here.

Gate C37, Now Napping

Six months ago I would have read this article and thought, "...eh, stupid", but today, after several 8+ hour delays and longer-than-that layovers at the airport, I'm on board with this idea. (Get it?)

Click to let you imagination take off, but don't go into a tailspin!

...thank you and God bless.

r/HistoryPorn

Say what you will about Reddit, there are a few gems to found amongst the dregs of the "front page of the internet". History Porn for example, a collection of old (sometimes very old) photographs that encapsulate time and place in a way you won't find anywhere else on the internet. Exhibit A, the below photo, an actual shot of Broadway, Saratoga Springs, New York, circa 1915. Pretty great, right? If history is your thing or you like to appreciate it in small doses, then r/History Porn is for you.

20 Strangers; A First Kiss

Film maker Tatia Pilieva captured the awkward magic of a first kiss when she asked 20 complete strangers–straight, gay, old, and young—to share a first kiss. What could've been super uncomfortable is somehow strangely beautiful. The nervous laughter, the stammering, the shuffling of feet, followed by awkward lead-ins quickly dissolves into physical attraction. Watch it here before it blankets your Facebook timeline in three weeks.

How do I Hold all These Blu-rays?

Need a long-term optical storage solution? Well, the good folks over at Sony and Panasonic have just the thing for you, today announcing the Archival Disk format. The new Archival Disc format that will store between 300GB and 1TB per disc at launch while promising "inter-generational compatibility" between different formats as the standard matures, but we've heard that schtick before... (*cough*Jaz Drives *cough*).  Expect to see the first 300GB hitting shelves Summer 2015. Upgrades will follow, targeting a whopping 1TB of space per disc.

Go Right

I found this gem a while ago. I don't for what reason it was made, but I like to think it was made for me since I watch it often. Maybe I'm feeling nostalgic or maybe it's my respect for the gaming industry, but when combined with the music and editing, this video gets me right in the feels every time. Enjoy!

40 Years of Cellphone

A fun look at some of the more prolific cellphones of the last 40 years. I'm a bit saddened by the lack of the Motorola Razr, the most dependable and one of the slickest phones I've ever owned, but I digress.

Bryan Tyler Giving Good Ridley (Scott)

One of my all-time favorite artists, Bryan Tyler, is on quite a roll recently with his eye-popping posters for Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner. Loving the technique; I'm so used to his clean lines I honestly didn't know it was him. Check them out here and here, respectively.

If you're not familiar with his work, you should be. Check out Bryan's carnival of awesome here. And hell, since I'm throwing out pub links all over the place, buy his Kickstarter-funded book here.

Aereo, A Television Service on Borrowed Time

If you're not familiar with Aereo, it's a cheap, seemingly too-good-to-be-true streaming television service that piggybacks television broadcasts on network streams, letting you "borrow" the telecast with a dime-sized antenna. It's a very cool innovation, but if it sounds shady...it's because it kind of is. The DoJ seems to thinks so to, believing that Aereo is re-transmitting broadcaster's content to the public – not unlike a cable company – and is therefore in violation of Federal copyright law. We'll all know more on April 22 (Earth Day!) when oral arguments are held.

TLDR: If you're one of the few urban areas (like Denver) that have the benefit of Aereo service, you might be losing it, and in short order. See the image below for a brief overview of Aereo, and read the rest of the article here.

Reebok, I Hardly Knew Thee

Reebok finally rebranded. I say finally since I feel the mark is more than a few years overdue. Though it's better than their old one, I can't say I really care or understand the reasoning behind the the Delta-esque looking mark. Regardless, I'll diefinitely consider Reebok the next time I'm in the market for a car, IT solution, ad agency pair of shoes.

To get the word out, part of their ad campaign features Miranda Kerr. Because if you're going to use sex to sell your new look, then you might as well use her.

Read about the finer points here.
